Scientists not involved in the study said it was too small for the findings to be accepted. They also said that we all have the chemical in our systems. This is a normal reaction from people who do not want to accept the truth. An adult will probably have no impairment, but a child is another matter.

NLRP3 inflamasone response
We hear about medical breakthroughs all the time. Unfortunately, after the loud announcement, very few get to the market. Australian researcher Dr. Rebecca Cole has discovered an anti-inflammatory compound that disrupts the functioning of inflamasone producing NLRP3, which causes inflammation. The inflammatory response is actually "manufactured" to believed attacks on one's body.

Ironically, Western people live constantly in a raised state of immune defense. This does more damage than good. Such diseases as arthritis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and cancer do arise from this imbalance.
  medication inflammatory. |
Drugs are available that do to a degree turn down the fighting response. A targeted medication though is needed. Like everything in this world patenting of the compound is happening right now. The company involved has raised $22 million, such is the promise of the potential drug.

It is known that the elderly do ultimately die from the body attacking "everything that moves".

LSD Chemistry Rises Again

Chemistry: Psychedelic drugs are again in vogue to treat addictions and PTSD.
What goes around comes around. That's how history is. Things that were old become young and "new" to a rising generation. Remember in the 1960s when experimentation with psychedelic was condemned as dangerous? Well now in many Western countries a lot of regulated trials are being done.
Woman takes lsd
It has been found that the drugs are effective in treating addiction of things like alcohol dependency and cigarettes. Those who suffer from anxiety and depression can also benefit. Whether taking psychedelic drugs in addictive in itself is not yet clear.

The most interesting and successful discovery was 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Victims of sexual assault, emergency responders, and police showed amazing results when given MDMA along with intensive psychotherapy. It is hoped that the Federal Drug Administration will enable it to be used by clinicians in 2021. Unfortunately, Australia is backward in coming forward. Politicians here are a bit old hat and live in the past believing that psychedelics are evil.

Plant Chemistry Indicates a Very Hot Future

Chemistry: Stomata on plant leaves shows the way to predict climate change.
It looks like the future is going to be very hot - in Asia at least. Oddly it will not get drier. With more carbon around plants will not need as much water, so grass will grow everywhere. A 5 degree rise in temperature is expected by mid-century. High humidity will make life unbearable..
Stomata on plant leaves
Plants have a significant effect on the climate in general. This has been ignored in the past. Scientists are now examining it. More efficient use of water means less water in the atmosphere which increases temperature during the day.  Spring will arrive earlier as the climate itself changes.

A study of stomata, tiny spores on leaves involved in carbon dioxide absorption and the shedding of water, has provided information on how plants affect the weather. It was initially for understanding how plants work, but it has ultimately been applied to the study of climate change.

Chromium is Carcinogenic at Any Level - Beware Weight Loss Pills!

Chromium like mercury has a bad name. We have all heard of mercury poisoning. It is a nasty and potentially fatal condition. Many miners today suffer from it particularly in developing countries where workplace health and safety is non-existent.
ulcer from chromium poisoning
Chromium comes in a variety of forms. It is used in compound with other metals. Its main use is for chrome plating, an industry which is fading as people turn to plastic based alternatives.  Chromium poisoning can occur through breathing in dust, eating, drinking, skin absorption and smoking.  Symptoms include dermatitis, asthma, ulcers, general infection, mucus membrane inflammation, burns on skin, respiratory tract inflammation, conjunctivitis with ulcers and lung cancer.

It is disconcerting to hear that chromium supplements are being offered to lose weight. Like smoking, general body inflammation can keep one skinny, but it is an irrational thing to do. The US Academy of Science claims that 200 micrograms a day is safe. The latest research points to Chromium being carcinogenic at any level.

Hazel Bishop's Long Lasting Lipsick

It was during the Depression. The world seemed to be coming to an end - the worst financial crisis the world had ever seen. Yet, out there, someone was thinking of the future. Hazel Bishop had a dream of setting up her own successful business. And she had ideas!
Hazel Bishop lipstick
The lady had to end her studies because she had no money to pay for a higher degree. Her only asset was a bachelors degree in chemistry. This was enough, however. At the time the makeup market was sown up by large companies who blocked access to newcomers. Hazel could see no barriers. She set about experimenting with different ingredients for lipstick.

The old joke of a man kissing a woman then going home to his wife who could see the smear of lipstick on his face was doing the rounds - a real "found out" joke. It was common knowledge at the time that bromo acids stained the lips, the drawback being that the acid peeled the top layer of skins off.

Hazel searched for an additive which would prevent this. It took her twenty years to stumble upon lanolin. This moisturiser stopped the peeling skin if bromo acid was kept very low. Voile! She had the new revolutionary product. Getting a loan from Barnard College she started her business. In the first year she made $69,000, quite a respectable sum in those days. Four years later she was turning over 10 million.

Unfortunately, her business partner, a marketer, was much smarter in business than Hazel. He quietly gobbled up most of the stock thus freezing the inventor out. A court settlement was a measly $408,000 and loss of the business.

Long lasting lipstick is still here today. Hazel Bishop made her mark in regard to inventing. Her business career did not go so well. We see this story many times. An intelligent inventor needs a trustworthy business savvy partner to succeed in the market.

Diseases From the Past, Return

It seems diseases that were thought to be long gone are reappearing. The medical community are not prepared for this and do not know how to respond. Scarlet fever is being communicated again from person to person.
Baby with scarlet fever
Oddly, this is in the UK and countries in Asia. China is the hotspot with 100,000 cases. Hong Kong has had 5,000. The UK reported 12,000 instances of infection.

Scarlet fever is a childhood disease. Symptoms include a very sore throat, skin rash, headache and vomiting. Antibiotics are the favored treatment. However, bacterial resistance to antibiotics is an issue. The great "fall-back", penicillin, is the most effective. Fears are that it will not work as its use continues.

New Finding for Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever

Catching dengue fever is a constant fear in Australia. Like malaria it is spread by mosquitoes. Its full name Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever. You can become very sick indeed if you develop the hemorrhagic form, though it seldom causes death.
A patient with Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever showing red spots of hemorrhage
Drugs made for sepsis infection are being used to treat dengue in mice. They has yet to be used on humans. Hopefully new methods for early detection and treatment with drugs will stop progression to the severe dengue.

A new finding could move treatment along a bit. The dengue virus NS1 protein causes immune cells to "leak" blood vessels. TLR4 is the pathway that triggers the response. Some existing drugs do block this pathway. Ironically, many of them did not stop sepsis. They were failures!

Other diseases also use the NS1 method of infection. Work has to be done to explore the battery of drugs already available to hopefully find successful treatments for these related illnesses.

Australia's Exports of Genetic Material is Growing

Animal genetics in Australia is going strong. Exports of genetic material is growing particularly in Columbia, Chile and Mexico. The world generally is its oyster.
Australian animal genetic exports semen
Semen is the primary export product. Chile imports bovine semen while sheep and goat semen is purchased by Columbia. Latin America is the main market. Australia has a way to go to reach the U.S. and Canada. However, it is quickly catching up.

The quality of Australian beef is high and breeds suit the climate of South America. Sheep and goats are highly regarded. Surprisingly, even canine semen is exported to SA. Embryos are also sent there.
